Funchal is situated between Camara de Lobos and the beautiful area of Santa Cruz, the City's name originates from the wealth of fennel found on the island, and was known once as an important shipping center during the 15th and 17th century. The name 'Funchal' originates from the abundance of fennel found on the beautiful island, and is known for being one of the most scenic cities in Portugal; this area was also once a prominent place for shipping during the 15th – 17th century. The city is small enough to discover on foot and there is plenty to see and do, the Se Cathedral is the central focus the city and its historical monument, and was built between 1443 to 1516, featuring wooden ceilings that were made from local wood. Sao Lourenco Palace is half fortress half palace and is an excellent example of mannerist architecture, the city boasts its own golf Course and Botanical Gardens and of course a picturesque harbour.
